September is over, but the work keeps going. As Governor Meyer put it at Eisenberg Elementary, "Literacy Month is every month."

Thank you to every partner who hosted an event, shared a post, volunteered or showed up to read. Here's a look back at September and a look at what's next.

Some Student IDs Are Now Library Cards

On September 30, the Alliance joined Governor Matt Meyer; Secretary of Education Cindy Marten, who also serves as a chair of the Alliance; Acting State Librarian Anne Hiller Clark; and advocates, educators and students at Eisenberg Elementary School in the Colonial School District. The Governor signed a proclamation declaring September Literacy Month in Delaware.

He also announced a new pilot that turns Eisenberg Elementary student IDs into library cards. Students can use the ID they already carry at their local libraries, starting with Route 9 and New Castle. Families don't fill out a separate library card application. It's a small change that clears a real hurdle between kids and books.

DE Reads Kicked Off on International Literacy Day

The Alliance and the Delaware Early Childhood Council brought New York Times bestselling author Dr. Dana Suskind to Duck Creek Regional Library. She talked with Lt. Governor Kyle Evans Gay about human connection in a world powered by AI, and about her new book, Human Raised.

A National Honor, Two Years Running

United Way of Delaware won a 2026 Library of Congress Literacy Award for its Get Delaware Reading work. Last year, Reading Assist earned the same honor. See the winners

Literacy on the Air

Delaware Public Media launched a Literacy Month website powered by the Alliance, with stories from across the state. Explore the stories

Books for Students

Alliance members and volunteers joined the Home Library Project and United Way of Delaware to sort books headed home with Delaware students.

October Is Health Literacy Month

Literacy shows up at the doctor's office too. Reading a prescription label, filling out a medical form and following discharge instructions all depend on clear information. Our partners at the Health Literacy Council of Delaware are focusing on plain language this month, and they've made it easy to help.
